Big Nights

Staycation continues at the Sank household. yesterday was a full day at home, full day being measured by; I woke up in my bed, and at the end of the day… I retired to the same. I think the problem with a staycation, as opposed to the more traditional vacation, meaning you actually go somewhere, is that a staycation allows you, check that, it requires that you do work around the house. Sitting around not doing anything isn’t really an option, especially when you’re married and your supervisor/boss, who BTW, has spent the last decade and a half hanging out around the house, and is loathe to see me “sitting around” . So, yesterday I fixed a toilet, cleaned a couple fish tanks, fixed a shopvac, and ran a couple errands. Not exactly vacation, but since it was on my time… there were no deadlines to accomplish, it’s wasn’t all that bad.

My daughter had a big night last night. Spent the evening at Jonas Brothers concert in Minneapolis. I relayed the story about how she got the tickets a week ago for those of you don’t remember, you can relive it here. Reading the paper this morning it was the crowd they expected, tens of thousands of screaming teens and three kids pretending to be musicians.

I had the good fortune to spend and evening out at our local racetrack. My birthday present from the Mrs. I’ve received some grief over the years over being a fan of NASCAR, and racing in general. The arguments go from “anyone can drive, therefore there’s no skill” to “its a bunch of hillbillies and moron”. Well a couple things I love about the sport is  1) it’s a sport that treats its fans better than most any other, makes an effort to reach out to them, thanks them after every event, sends it’s stars out into the field to meet them.. which is what was going on last night. Sprint Cup (the top tier of drivers) is in Chicago this weekend, so the teams and drivers fanned out across the upper midwest to visit the small tracks that make up farm system for the big show. So last night I got a chance to meet one my personal favorites from the sport, team owner Jack Roush. Roush Racing has a remarkable record on the track over the years, and listening to Mr. Roush speak last night it’s amazing how strategic a former engineer can be.. Driver development programs, equipment research and engineering, marketing on and on.. cool stuff.

After the meet with the team, the usual Elko schedule of racing.. great time out there, they really have a fantastic product. Laura, the only other race fan in the family, and I just about met at the door when we came in.. she had fun, I had fun.. she was a bit upset to learn I’d been to a race.. “you went to a real race?” what’s a real race? “you know, where the stop and take the tires off and do that thing where they… “ She then mimed a airwrench changing tires and making adjustments. “no dear, this was Elko, they don’t have pit stops”. Oh ok.. and off to bed we went, she did get a signed drivers autograph from Greg Biffle, that makes two for her now.

This week the agenda is.. leaving for the lake this afternoon.
